Rainbow Sherbet Candy Colors

Rainbow Sherbet Baker Beach, oil on canvas, 8x10" x 1.5"

Dapples of peachy pastel pinks and soft periwinkle blues blanket the sky in this epic sunset on Baker Beach, San Francisco.

It was during the heat wave of 2017, when San Francisco saw rare temperatures breaking 100 degrees.  The beaches were packed with more people then I had ever seen,  as people flocked to the cold salty water to cool down.  Usually only the dedicated surfers, joggers, and  shoreline fishermen are brave enough to enjoy San Francisco’s cold and foggy beaches.

Because sunny beach days are so rare in San Francisco, the people here all come out to celebrate and spend time outside.  We were blessed with this gorgeous sunset on that evening, as the sky filled out with delicious pastel colors.

Pastel colors are some of my favorite to paint, especially when I get to sneak in some brights to make them pop.  They remind me of the swirling colors of rainbow sherbet ice cream, with candy sprinkles on top… you can almost taste the colors!

A Celebration Of Sunrise

Burning Red Sun, oil,  5x7"

There is something so dreamy and meditative about the crossing of the threshold from the chaos of the night time into the welcoming arms of the morning.  That liminal space between which celebrates the transition from dark to bright, from old to new.  The intersection of dream time and conscious wakening.

I have always found sunrises to be a fascinating metaphor for transforming the shadows in our minds into those mindful realizations that make you go "Aha!"  Each passing from night to day gives us a new opportunity to reset and rejoice, to begin anew.  In the night, we dream, we process all of the incoming data and information of our waking experiences into scenes rich in metaphor and mythical symbolism.

The colors of the sunrise are like a gift that congratulates us on a dream well done, and sets us on our journey into the light of the day.
